What does it cost to commissioning an illustration?
To calculate the cost of commissioning an illustration we need to know the following:
How should the illustration be?
How many illustrations are required and what is their complexity? Do you need 1 simple spot illustration or 10 elaborated scenes? A description of the subject and samples from my portfolio are very helpful.
How will the illustration be used?
Commissioning a bespoke illustration doesn't automatically mean that you own the artwork rights, as the illustrator always retains the copyright of the image. The copyright can be purchased, but the cost is often prohibitive. To avoid this, buying a usage license is the most common option.
A usage license is made up of three parts; time, territory, and media, stating how long (6 months, 1 year, 5 years, in perpetuity...), in which territories in the world (US, UK, Europe, Global…), and in which media (press, online advertising, social media, email, brochures/flyers, POS/in-store, out of home advertising, merchandise, packaging... ) you may use the image created for you.
Once all this information is provided, I will be able to submit a budget with no obligation.
How long does it take to complete a commission?
Production time depends on the volume and complexity of the project. Once we have an idea of the requirements, we can set a workflow together to know how long the illustration is going to take. If the project is time-sensitive or you have a clear deadline in mind, please, specify it.
